Social Transformation

As a church, we are committed to social transformation in Sheffield and beyond. There are a number of initiatives and projects that we run from our campus and elsewhere:

  • A chance to talk, pray and learn more about God's plans for our lives over soup and bread. Find out more here.

  • An opportunity to enjoy a hot drink and a slice of cake in a safe and warm space. Find out more here.

  • We work in partnership with S6 Foodbank, the largest Foodbank in Sheffield with 11 distribution points and part of the Trussell Trust Network.

Broomhall Foodbank runs on Mondays 10.30am-12pm. The Crookes Foodbank runs on Tuesdays 2-3pm based at STC Sheffield.

The aim is to create a safe space where people are welcomed and treated with dignity and respect. As well as providing food we seek, where possible, to help people move on from their current circumstances so that they will not need to continue to access the Foodbank. When appropriate prayer is offered and there are conversations about Jesus and faith.

The two Foodbanks are run by volunteers. There are different roles within the Foodbanks both involving beneficiary contact and not.

Please note that no food can be distributed outside of the stated times.

Other projects we support:

  • CAP has a Sheffield Debt Centre based at St Thomas Philadelphia. CAP is a renowned charity with an excellent reputation of helping people become debt-free, and they are also zealous in their desire to see people encounter Jesus.

STC partners with the Debt Centre, funding one employed Debt Coach and another volunteer. There are various volunteering opportunities with the Debt Centre.

  • Revive Café runs every other Saturday lunchtime from the back of the Cathedral and provides light lunches to those who are homeless.

  • The Ruby Project exists to offer solace and support to women affected by the sex industry through safe spaces, street outreach and bridging the gap between professional support.

  • A Sheffield-based charity providing short-term housing for people seeking sanctuary who have had their asylum claim refused.

Charities we endorse:

  • Acts 435 is a way that everyone can get involved in helping those in need. If you think “I would like to help those in need but I don’t know how to” – then Acts 435 is an answer!

Acts 435 is an online giving charity, directly connecting those who want to give with those who are in genuine need of their help, through a network of local churches and charities. 100% of what is donated via Acts 435 goes directly to those in need.

  • Since 2009, Baby Basics has been supporting new mothers and families who are struggling to meet the financial and practical burden of looking after a new baby, working alongside a wide range of frontline health and social care professionals.

Baby Basics provides much needed essentials and equipment to mothers and families who are unable to provide these items for themselves; including but not limited to teenage mums, people seeking asylum and women fleeing domestic abuse and trafficking. The aim is to help these mothers practically and generously, demonstrating the love of God through the charity’s care.

  • Golddigger Trust is an award-winning charity, working to equip young people with the confidence and skills to make positive choices for themselves.

Its aim is to build positive wellbeing in young people aged 11-18, based in Sheffield, and impacting the UK. Investing in thousands of young people through innovative projects and programmes, Golddigger Trust is committed to ‘digging out the gold’ within people and helping them to reach their full potential.

They are motivated by the Christian faith; inspiring them to speak hope into darkness, modelled by the teachings of Jesus to see value in all – especially the vulnerable. They are wholeheartedly committed to welcoming everyone regardless of race, gender, sexuality, religious affiliation or disability, ensuring that their services are offered to all young people, regardless of faith or background.

  • The Besom provides a bridge between those who want to give money, time, skills or things, and those who are in need. It ensures that what is given is used effectively.

The Besom in Sheffield was formed out of a desire to see the church in Sheffield engage more actively with those living on the margins. Its core team, made up of members of different churches, meets weekly to plan activities. It has two van runs a week to collect and deliver furniture. It also organises decorating and gardening projects for members of local churches.
